My Thirtyith Blog Sleep-less

Is this you? It was me.

I think we all have had one or two nights like this on occasion, however if this is you on a regular basis, there is a better way, there are natural solutions good for those individual nights or the many. I love Natural solutions, they are great as they are non-addictive, you have the sleep you want, and there is no sleepy hang-over the next day.

When I found Lavender and doTERRA's Serenity, I started to get my first good sleeps in 13 years. I have talked about the stress I was feeling after being assaulted but not about how much my sleep was affected. I was afraid to sleep. If the closet creaked as the AC or heat came on I woke shaking and was afraid to go back to sleep. The sound of the alarm was jarring and I would lay shaking for some time afterward unable to move regardless of needing to get up and go to work.

I was reminded of all that this week, when I was talking with a friend who had a terrifying experience with a break-in. Her nerves are stretched very tight. The sound of her son coming in the house at night scares her and she can not get back to sleep for hours.

There are two things to think about here in her situation and mine, the fear and the need to sleep. Not everyone has a fear element that keeps them awake. For some it can be a busy mind that needs to be calmed, for others it is their shift work that keeps their circadian rhythm off balance. There are lots of reasons that people can not get to or stay asleep. There is hope for everyone that has a sleeping issue. Natural solutions do really work.

One of those natural solutions is Lavender essential oil. Lavender is one of the most used and is well know for its calming and soothing. There are a lot of scientific studies that show the calming support of lavender. doTERRA Lavender is registered as a Natural Health Product (NHP) in Canada with Health Canada. NHP Lavender is used in aromatherapy; to help relieve headaches, as a nervine and calmative, to help relieve colds and cough, as a carminative and antispasmodic for symptomatic relief of digestive discomfort, and to help relieve joint and muscle pain associated with sprain, strain and rheumatoid arthritis. So you can see just how it can help at bed time with its ability to sooth and calm many issues. It is the one I relied upon the most. Lavender helped me be more calm and it helped me (still does) get restored regardless of the hours I sleep.

One of the other essential oils I rely on at bed time (also at the dentist and other times) is Wild Orange. Wild Orange essential oil is also an NHP registered with health Canada and is used in aromatherapy; as a nervine and calmative, as a carminative and antispasmodic for the symptomatic relief of digestive discomfort. Wild Orange is one of doTERRA’s top selling essential oils due to its calming aroma and health benefits. When people tell me their children are having nightmares I always suggest Wild Orange be added to the bedroom diffuser or put onto the bottom of the kids feet before bed time (Putting oils on the bottom of the feet help every part of the body be uplifted as there are touch points on the feet for the whole body) to help keep the kids in a happier frame of mind. It certainly works for me. Wild Orange essential oil contains a high level of monoterpenes, which makes it particularly stimulating and refreshing.

There are other essential oils and blends that are wonderful to help the feelings of increased calm and to help with sleep. Each person finds the solution that works best with their body chemistry with trial. Lavender and a blend based on Lavender called Serenity, are the ones I generally suggest first as they help most people. If a person would rather have something less floral, there are woods and grasses that are also grounding and restful that may be a better choice for them. Cedarwood, Vetiver and Petitgrain come to my mind first.

I used to open and pass around Vetiver at classes, until I realized every time I did I was falling asleep on my way home. Cedarwood is my moms favorite to help her sleep and Petitgrain is dubbed the mens' Lavender. There are lots of powerful choices.
