FORTY-First Blog  living room.

I just love walking into a room with it smelling good. How about you? What is your favorite scent to smell in your home? I love smelling baked goods when I come home. No, not because they were baked for me while I was out, sadly Rascal has yet to learn to bake. Yesterday I baked some banana muffins for my mom and when I came home that is all I could smell. It was a nice scent to come home to. I also like the smell apple pie and below you will find a diffuser recipe that truly smells like apple pie. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about it.

One of my other favorite smells is Frankincense. Frankincense essential oil is soothing and not overly in your face. I find it sweet and very pleasant and not only that it has therapeutic properties unlike those great smelling baked goods. A nice smelling home is important, not only for when company arrives but for your own enjoyment of home. Smells can change your mood and bring back memories. Everything you inhale goes directly into your lungs and into your bloodstream. What you inhale matters.

I used to love the smell of some commercial cleaning products, but then I learned about the synthetic toxins that were used for fragrance.  I found out that they were actually making my allergies worse. My stuffy nose would clear when I left home. I stopped using them but wondered what I should use instead. I still wanted a clean home. I then found essential oils and boy am I happy about it.

Part of what makes me happy is being able to use natural products to clean-up things like upholstery. Couches are one of those things that hold smells that are not so nice. Smells like spilled food and pets are ones that you want to be cleaning out. To clean or just make the upholstery smell better here are some good DIYs.

Upholstery/fabric cleaner
1/4 cup warm water
2 Tea spoons Castile soap
3 Drops Lime essential oil.

Mix ingredients in a glass container. Dip cloth in the mixture and dab onto the stain for quick spot treatments on any fabric.

I have a cloth couch but you may have a leather one, so here is a leather cleaner for you.

Leather Cleaner
1/4 cup Olive oil
1/2 Cup White Vinegar
3 Drops Eucalyptus essential oil
8 oz spray bottle

Mix the ingredients together in your spray bottle and shake well. Spray the leather and then wipe it clean with a cotton cloth. Please note that this recipe is perfectly safe for regular leather but is not designed to use on suede.

You may not need to actually clean up a mess but you may still want to deodorize. Leather does not hold as many smells so this may be what you want for your cloth furniture.

DIY Deodorizer
2 Tablespoons white distilled vinegar
30 drops Citronella or Purify essential oil
Purified water to top off bottle
Glass 16 oz. spray bottle

Add all ingredients to glass spray bottle. Shake well before using and store in a cool dry place.

There is a lot more than cleaning the couches, but you may just want to do a quick dusting and there is a great DIY for that as well.

Dusting Spray
1 Cup water - distilled or boil and cool
1/4 Cup Vinegar
1 Tablespoon Olive oil
15 Drops of YOUR prefered essential oil (ie: Lemon, Wild Orange)

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle before each use. Spray on a microfiber or other soft cloth and apply to surface to clean, polish, and keep dust away.
